Medicine
at School <back
to top>
The nurses' office does not dispense over-the-counter medications such as aspirin,
Tylenol, or antacids; however, high school students are permitted to carry their
own medications if the following conditions are met:
- The
student must carry a written request from the parent or guardian that the
student be allowed to take the medication at school. This applies to prescriptions
and over-the-counter medications. The request must specify the name of the
student, the medication and the dose time(s) and/or indications.
- The
student must register the note with the nurse on the day of the initial dose
at school.
- The
medication must not be a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia (i.e., syringes),
or represent a potential hazard to others. These will be kept locked in the
clinic and given to the student at the time of the doses. Students
are never allowed to carry a controlled substance.
- Students
with asthma who have written authorization to self-administer from his/her
parents and physician or other licensed health-care provider may be permitted
to possess and use prescribed asthma medication at school or school-related
events. The student and parents should see the school nurse or principal if
the student has been prescribed asthma medication for use during the school
day.
- The
medication must be kept in the original container. Parents should ask pharmacies
for small containers with prescription labeling if this will be more convenient
for carrying. These containers, when properly labeled are accepted.
- Refrigeration
will be available in the clinic for medications, when necessary.
- Any
medication must be surrendered by the student to the nurse when requested
by a school employee.
- Medications
will not be sent home with the student without parent authorization.
- Medications
left in the clinic will be returned to the student at the end of the school
day or treatment period as indicated, unless the nurse is requested to do
otherwise.
- Medications
left unclaimed at the end of the school year will be destroyed if attempts
to return them to the parent/guardian or student are unsuccessful.
