Research
and Homework Help
The Lewisville Independant School District Provides a website,
Research Bookmarks,
for teacher and student use. The user name and password are available
from your librarian.
On that site, you will find link buttons on the left column
of the website to useful information including bibliographic (citation)
sites, governmentalsites, website evaluation guidelines, education "gateways,"
media literacy sites, webquests, copyright and plagiarism information,
clip art sites, and content specific sites. We encourage you to look there
first.
In the center of the site, you will find link buttons to
the subscription databases paid for by LISD or by Region XI. These provide
access to thousands of articles, stories, reports, studies, on the major
subjects your students are researching, as well as copyright free photographs
to use the in presentations through the Multimedia archive.
In the right column, you will find links to the MARCUS
BOOKMARKS, which provide Marcus students and staff with additional
subscription databases purchased by the Marcus library. In all cases,
a user name and password is required to access either the Marcus site
or the LISD site. these bookmarks are available by remote access on the
internet with the username and password available from the librarian.
Students
must have a Picture ID card in order to check out books.
A
maximum of 3 books may be checked out for a period of two weeks and may be
renewed two times.
Students are encouraged to return or renew books on or before the due date
that is stamped in the books in order to avoid fines.
Special
Circulation Items:
Some items
are not checked out to students:
- Reference
books (with the green “reference” sticker on the spine)
- Books
from the regular collection which are marked “Not for Circulation.”
- Periodicals
(magazines) and newspapers which can be used in the library.
- Specialized
resources such as CultureGrams™.
- Audiovisual
materials which are a part of the classroom resources collection.

Reserved
Books
Since the
main purpose of the library is to support your research and your teacher’s
objectives, items that your teacher wants to be available at all times
may
be reserved. Your teacher initiates a reserve by requesting that ALL books
on certain subjects be put on reserve. Books are reserved by subject, not
title, because it is impossible to make a list of all the titles of books.
The library
staff supports your teacher's request that all books on certain subjects stay
in the library by not checking out any item, which relates in any way to the
subject matter reserved.
Though many
of the reserved books may be pulled and placed on a book cart with your teacher's
name, ANY book, regardless of where it may be located in the library, that
you find which covers the subject on reserve may not be checked out until
after 4:05 p.m. on the date that your teacher has given for the end of the
reserve period. Location of the book has nothing to do with its being on reserve.
Books on
reserve can be located anywhere in the library. Although many may have
been
pulled and placed on a book cart with the teacher’s name, others may
still be on the shelves, on a table or other furniture, or anywhere else
in
the library. Location of the book has nothing to do with its being on reserve.

Using
the Library
Admits:
Students are required to have library admits in order to come to the library
during all four class periods, including lunch. Students obtain an admit from
their teachers, and must sign in during class time. Admits are not required
before, or after school, during the passing periods, or during the break.
Computers:
There
are three computers located near the library entrance which are dedicated to
the library’s Catalog (OPAC).
20 are available
for student use according with LISD AUP guidelines.
Students may come to use computers to do online research, type papers or to
create presentations.Students with a class meeting in the library have priority
over individuals coming with library admits.
Students
can print (black and white only) for 5¢ per page
Students
should bring a floppy disk or flash drive (USB) to save files, or be prepared
to save
in the student's personal directory on the network server. the CD drive in
the computer is "read-only"
Copiers:
The library has two copy machines available for
students' usage. Both of the copiers enlarge and reduce images. The cost
for copying is 15¢ per page.

Intellectual
Freedom / Self-censorship Statement:
Reading
is a joy, a privilege, and the right of every patron.
As
you select the library resources for your research and for your reading pleasure,
please understand that every book is not the best choice for every person.
If
a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it and
select another one.
Only
you can know what reading materials best serve you and your family's standards
and beliefs.
