Classical Civilization and Academic Rules

  • To be eligible to enter any classical civilization contest, a student must be enrolled in Latin for the 2001-2001 school year. Contestants must also be TSJCL members registered for the TSJCL state convention.
  • Only one entry per school is permitted per category, except in Miscellaneous Art where 3 entries are permitted. Veterans are not permitted to compete.
  • All entries must be created since the last TSJCL Conventioin. All entries must be the original work of the contestant who enters them. Group entries are not acceptable.
  • All entries must adhere to these rules and the rules of the individual contest. Failure to comply with these rules may result in the judges deducting points or disqualifying the entry.
  • TSJCL assumes no responsibility for the artwork not picked up at the end of the convention. All prejudged contest entries must be postmarked by March 5, 2002.

  • To enter any academic contest, a student must be enrolled in Latin in the 2001-2002 school year or be a veteran. Students must also be members of TSJCL and NJCL and registered for the TSJCL State convention. All academic contests will be divided into eight levels:
    • 1/2 A- Junior high or middle school students who will take more than one year to complete Latin I and are currently in the first year.
    • 1/2 B- Junior high or middle school students who will take more than one year to complete Latin I and are currently in the second year.
    • I- First year students who will complete Latin I within one year.
    • II- Second year students.
    • III- Third year students.
    • IV- Fourth year students.
    • V- Students with five or more years of Latin.
    • Vet- Students who have completed all the Latin offered at their school, or a course in Latin prior to this school year but were unableto enroll in Latin this school year. Veteran results do not count in sweepstakes and will not receive ribbons. Veteran students are not allowed to compete in Dramatic Interpretation, Latin Oratory or Sight Recitation but may compete in Upper Certamen.
  • Each TSJCL chapter may enter only one contestant in each level of each academic contest except for Dramatic Interpretation and Reading Comprehension.
  • A student may enter only two academic contests. The academic contests include: Decathalon, Dramatic Interpretation, Geography of Ancient World, Grammar, Greek Derivatives, Greek History, Greek Life and Literature, Latin Derivatives, Latin Literature, Latin Oratory, Mottoes, Mythology, Reading Comprehension, Roman History, Roman Life, Sight Recitation, and Vocabulary.
