Classical Civilization Contests

Art
  • No names on entry. All contestants will be given a form and number for their entries.
  • All entries must have a classical theme. This is defined as a Greek or Roman Classical mythology or classical historical theme.
  • Entries must not exactly reproduce a published work of art.
  • Entries must be the work of the contestant who enters them.
  • Art contest entries will be brought to the convention. Entries may not be picked up until after the time designated in the convention program.
  • Art entries should be accompanied by a 3x5 card which explains the classical theme and calls the judge's attention to anything the contestant feels is noteworthy.
  • Categories (No frames allowed. Must be stiff-matted.)
    • Watercolor or pastels
    • Monochomatic drawing: pencil charcoal, ink
    • Polychromatic drawing: colored pencils or ink
    • Oil or Acrylic
    • Mosaics such as sequins, colored glass, beads, etc.
    • Mixed Media: includes 2-d art
    • Sculpture or Pottery: handmade only (no molds); pottery should be a container
    • Models: any size, 3-d
    • Miscellaneous: 3 entries per school permitted; projects that do not fall into above categories e.g. dolls, decorative stitching, jewelry
Essay
  • The topic is: Speculate how the course of history might be different if Antony and Cleopatra had defeated Octavian in the civil war.
  • Entry must be written in essay form.
  • It must be typed and double-spaced.
  • There is a maximum of 1200 words and a minimum of 500 words. Articles are not included in the word count.
Research Paper
  • The topic is: Compare and contrast the roles of ancient political leaders with the roles of leaders today.
  • The entries must be typed and double spaced.
  • There is a maximum of 2500 words and a minimum of 1000 words.
  • All entries must use proper documentation and bibliographical form. Recommended texts from proper style are MLA and APA handbooks.
Original English Oratory
  • The topic is: In virtute sunt multi ascensus.
    "In excellence, there are many degrees."

  • The time limit is between 2 minutes and 6 minuntes, +/- 15 seconds.
  • No costume or special dress may be worn. Must be memorized, no notes.
Traditional Photo Contest
  • No names on entry.
  • Entries must be the work of the contestant who is entering them and must have been taken since the last state convention.
  • Photos must be black and white or color, dry mounting or matting is optional, but strongly suggested. No frames.
  • All entries must be accompanied by a 3x5 card which explains the theme and call's the judges attention to anything the contestant feels is noteworthy.
  • All entries must be brought to the convention.
Digital/Computer Enhanced Photo Contest
  • See above (traditional photo)
Prejudged Contests
  • All entries in the written contests must be accompanied by an envelope containing an index card which states the contestant's name, school, city and student ID#. The envelope must be attached to the entry and the contestant's name should not appear anywhere on the paper. These contests will be judged before the beginning of the convention. It is mandatory that 3 copiese of the entry be sent to:

  • Poetry
    • The poem must be written in English and contain a classical theme.
    • The entry must be double-spaced, and 25 lines or fewer.
    • The poem must be an original composition of the current school year that has never previously been published and may be written in any meter.
Club Activities
  • Scrapbook
    • Publicity, written or pictorial must pertain to JCL or classics. Cover design must not cost more than $40.00. Xerox copies of receipts and a cost sheet signed by local sponsor must be presented at the contest. Every item must be taken into account, whether bought, borrowed, or previously owned by the contestant.
    • There are two divisions: Clubs with 35 or fewer members must compete in the small club division.
    • Size restrictions are as follows: The pages may be no larger than 22 x 28 and the box or notebook holding the pages may be only as large as needed to contain the pages.
  • Poster Contest
    • Poster must be 22 x 28 and must promote Latin or JCL.
    • All posters must be flat and should not have any moving parts.
    • JCL reserves the right to keep any posters for publicity purposes.
Costume Contests
  • Only three entries per school: 1 boy, 1 girl, and 1 couple
  • All costumes must be modeled by the contestants.
  • Must not cost more than $35 each.
  • All contestants should be able to justify the authenticity of the costume by stating the classical source.
  • Characters:
    Male: Laocoon
    Female: Penelope
    Couple: Baucis and Philemon
Vocal Contests
  • Solo
    • Each contestant must give the judge the name of the song and its composer. The contestant must also tell the judge if the pronunciation will be classical or ecclesiastical Latin.
    • Each contestant must give the judge an original copy of the music.
    • Each contestant may give an intro of less than one minute.
    • The performance of the selection may be a cappella or with a cued tape for accompaniment.
  • Ensemble
    • Same as above.
State T-shirt Contest
  • Entry must be an original design.
  • The design must be able to be inferred to a silkscreen.
  • The shirt should also include the NJCL slogan:
    "Magnos homines virtute metimur, non fortuna"

  • Entries must be brought on paper and in color to the contest
  • The top 5 designs will become property of TSJCL and may be used for the Texas State T-shirt at the 2002 convention.
