FFA
Members, Why Are We Here?
To
practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities, and
responsibilities, and develop those qualities of leadership,
which an FFA member should possess.
Thank you for supporting our FFA students!
Marcus shares a livestock facility by the water treatment plant
(on the south side of the Lewisville Lake dam) in old town Lewisville.
It's a great place to take your youngsters one afternoon to
see all the livestock these kids work on throughout the year.
Currently we have cattle, goats, and sheep out there. Soon we'll
have little piglets out there, they are really cute! Piglets
come late November, early December. We share this facility with
Lewisville High School. The livestock barn usually stays full
of animals throughout the school year and is a center of activity
for our students. We have separate areas for cattle, sheep,
goats and swine.
It is such a great program and my kids have gained so much from
their experience. Marcus and Lewisville High Schools are the
only two schools in LISD that offer and Agri Science program
and the opportunity to raise a livestock project. We are very
fortunate to have this program available to our students. We
owe a great thanks to Mr. Gilbreath and Mrs. Welch for teaching
our kids the value of hard work, responsiblity and leadership!!
When you hear of some of your students going to the Ft. Worth
Livestock show and rodeo or Denton County Youth Fair, that's
what we're all about! They show their livestock projects to
win their classes and sell their animal for (hopefully) a great
amount of money that will fund their college education.
We also have an LISD Livestock Show and Sale that concludes
our program and clears the barn of livestock. We have a silent
auction, Show and Sale of the livestock on Saturday. The date
this year is Saturday, March 24th at the Cottonwood Arena (located
behind Weaver Mfg. on 407, south side)
We have another Marcus FFA success! This year Marcus FFA had
two horse judging teams! Team #1 consisted of Catlin Golding,
Katelyn Spradley, Shady Foreman, and Carlie Dearing. Team #2
consisted of Aimee Arsenault, Lisa Deluca, Shelby Thomas, and
Shaila Watson. They were successful at all of the six major
contest we went to! Just this past week, Team #1 placed first
at our Area 5 Horse Judging Contest, which enables them to compete
at the state contest on April 19th in Lubbock. Please congratulate
all of them for a job well done and wish them luck! Thank you
also for working with them in their absences!
Last
week was a great week for Marcuss FFA Members
Emily H.: Crowned Denton County Livestock Association Youth
Fair QUEEN-Thanks to all who supported her in this endeavor!
Goat Results:
Leslie G.: Reserve Grand Champion Goat of Denton County (2nd
out of 130+ goats)
Ashley D.: 3rd place
Amy L.: 4th place
Kimber M.: 7th place
Katie H.: 8th place
Bobby G. & Tiffany O. also showed and did a great job!
Thanks for your continued support and forgiveness of our students
being out of class!
Last Thursday, Mitchell D., a freshman here at Marcus showed his
steer at the Ft. Worth Stock Show.
He placed 7th out of 37 in the Shorthorn show and made the sale.
To make the sale at Ft. Worth is a huge accomplishment, and is
considered by many one of the toughest livestock shows in the
country. Out of around 2500 - 3000 entries only 260 steers make
it into the sale. The grand champion brought $187,000 on Saturday
morning, and Mitchell sold his for a total around $4200.00. We
are very proud of this young man and his accomplishments. Currently
we are preparing for the steer show at the San Antonio Livestock
Show next week. We will have 4 students taking their animals down
next week. The students are Emily H., Crystal M., Emma H., and
Katelyn S.. If you see any of these students wish them luck! Hopefully
the Marcus FFA will have some success equal to that of Ft. Worth
at San Antonio and Houston.
Thanks for your support!

Marcus FFA has more great news! On Saturday, November 17, Leslie
G., Lindsay F., Crystal M., and Emilee L. spent the first day
of their holiday break competing in the Area FFA Agricultural
Issues Contest in Krum. They took 1st place and will be advancing
to the State FFA Leadership Development Event Contest on December
1 at Sam Houston University! The contest requires FFA members
to pick an agricultural issue that is relevant to not only today’s
time, but also that directly affects each member of the team.
The members this year created a twelve minute presentation that
reveals the pros and cons of urban sprawl, which is an increase
in the abundance of people due to the growth of the community,
the decrease of agricultural land, and the expansion of businesses
in a rural setting. The presentation discusses the increase
in traffic congestion and pollution due to urban sprawl, but
it also describes the shopping conveniences and a safer environment
that urban sprawl provides. These members have spent countless
hours on this presentation and have also overcome some stiff
competition. They have much to be proud of!
National Convention
The week of Oct. 22-26 three of our students
were chosen to attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis,
IN. We really appreciate those parents, teachers, and administrators
that worked with our students to make this possible! The following
is an article written by Katelyn S in regards to her experience.
Two weeks ago, Emma H, Lindsay F, and I traveled to Indianapolis
to attend the 80th Annual National FFA Convention. I can honestly
say that it was an opportunity of a lifetime.
I first attended the Texas FFA State Convention as a freshman.
My initial thought was that there was no way there was any better
FFA experience. But I stand corrected. National Convention was
incredible-the speakers were the best I had ever heard, and
the college and job fair was huge! The convention hall that
the convention was held in was most likely larger than the square
footage of Marcus High School combined. Also, there were blue
jackets everywhere! You would talk to people from Montana on
the bus, Illinois at the cross walk, California at lunch, and
Puerto Rico in session. And the best part about this was that
absolutely everyone treated you as if you were long lost friends.
The camaraderie that transcended across state lines was unfathomable.
I have already been in contact with a girl from California since
I left Indiana! The friendships that Lindsay, Emma, and I made
were not only made with the people from across the nation, but
they were also strengthened with those from our own area. In
conjunction with attending the convention, we also visited a
technologically advanced lamb facility and Indianapolis Motor
Speedway.
The experience was incredible and something that I will remember
for a lifetime. As cheesy as it sounds, hearing 50,000 FFA members,
advisors, and supporters stand up and state in unison that we
were there to practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities
and responsibilities and develop those qualities of leadership
which an FFA member should possess” gave me chills and
reignited my passion and belief in the FFA program-one of the
best youth organizations in America.

LISD FFA made a showing
at the North Texas State Fair
11 Marcus FFA and Lewisville FFA members spent the two weekends
before school started competing with their livestock projects
at the North Texas State Fair held in Denton last week. They
all came out successful!
Through the FFA program students can raise cattle, swine, sheep,
goats, rabbits, and chickens. Throughout the show season, which
varies for each animal, they compete against other area FFA
members’ livestock projects. Some characteristics that
make certain animals more desirable than others include balance,
more muscle, and structural correctness. These projects not
only teach students more about the livestock industry, but also
life skills such as responsibility, financial management, time
management, and leadership skills.
The results for the North Texas State Fair 2007 show are as
follows:
Marcus FFA Members:
Mitch D-Reserve Breed Champion, Shorthorn Steer
Crystal M-4th place, Hereford Steer
Emma H- Reserve Breed Champion, Simbrah Steer
