Tests
If you have not taken the SAT or ACT, you should take it this
fall to meet deadlines for college admissions. Check with colleges
for their admission deadlines. SAT and ACT registration materials
are available in the counseling center, along with practice
tests.
Use Marcus school code 444 132 when registering.
SAT test dates and information: page 21. Also www.collegeboard.com
ACT test dates and information: page 22. Also www.actstudent.org
A practice SAT will be given at Marcus on November 12th, registration
times will be announced later.
THEA is a placement test required by all Texas public 2 and
4 year colleges. If you plan to attend a college in another
state, check with that college concerning a similar test in
that state. You may already be exempt from the THEA test by
scoring high enough on the TAKS test, the SAT, or the ACT. Check
with the college you plan to attend to find their required exemption
scores. Registration information is in counseling center and
page 23. Also www.thea.nesinc.com
Advanced Placement Tests: Registration information for AP
tests and which colleges accept AP scores for credit are found
at www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy.
Also page 24.
Senior Girls: Panhellanic Sorority
Information
After May 1st, you may pick up Panhellanic sorority
packets in Mrs. Markham's office in the couseling center. The
packet contains information you need to join a sorority in college.
College Applications: Once you decide upon a college or colleges
you want to attend, apply as early as possible. You should apply
for financial aid/scholarships when applying to college.
For any Texas public university, you will complete the Texas
Common Application; you may obtain an application in the counseling
center or apply online at www.applytexas.org.
Other colleges have their own application forms or websites.
See pages 12 and 34 as examples.
Information about any colleges can be obtained in the counseling
center, or you can search for any college at www.fastweb.com
or go to COIN (on MHS computers) or Discovery website.
Transcripts: You must send your transcript when you apply
to any college. Transcripts are a record of all courses you
have taken during high school and the grades you earned in each
course; your GPA, rank, and TAKS scores are included on your
transcript. Complete a transcript request form in the counseling
center each time you apply to a college. Official transcripts
must be sent directly from the counseling office to the designated
institution; you may request an unofficial transcript for yourself,
then make copies as needed. SAT, ACT, and AP scores are sent
with the transcript, only if you have a signed Score Release
form on file in the counseling office.
GPA and Class Rank are used by colleges to determine admission.
Your GPA and corresponding rank are determined by grades earned
in all core classes during the past three years. New rankings
are calculated again in January and after the 3rd nine weeks.
Letters of Recommendation: Some applications require letters
of recommendation. If you need a recommendation letter from
your counselor or teacher, contact them early (2 weeks notice);
you should provide information about yourself at that time (counselors
have a form designed for this purpose).
Financial Aid: Scholarship Newsletters are published each month,
providing you information about scholarships and other financial
aid available; these are distributed in some senior classes,
and they are available in the counseling center. The FAFSA (federal
financial aid) should be completed by every senior seeking financial
assistance; many other scholarships require you to file the
FAFSA application. Complete and submit the FAFSA in early January;
applications are available in the counseling center in December
each year, or you can file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
. See pages 25-28.
Graduation Plans: All students are initially on the Recommended
graduation plan designed to prepare you for continued success
in college. See page 54.
Students earning three or more foreign language credits are
encouraged to meet the standards of the Achievement Program
Distinguished. See page 30 for details. Individuals not completing
at least two credits of foreign language will graduate on the
Minimum plan.
If you are seeking an athletic scholarship, you must register
with NCAA Clearinghouse before a college can recruit you. Register
at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
and print two transcript request forms to be given to our registrar
in the counseling center. One transcript will be sent now, and
the other will be automatically sent after you graduate.
Timeline for Seniors: Use the month by month checklist to insure
you have met all deadlines during your senior year. Pages 42-44.
